Alcalá de Henares, founded by the Romans with the name of Complutum, the origin of the adjective “complutense” which describes its inhabitants, has seen a number of different civilizations.It was the birthplace of the Archpriest of Hita and Miguel de Cervantes. University and historic complex. Registered in 1998 as a Mankind Heritage Site. Founded by Cardinal Ximénez de Cisneros at the beginning of the 16th century, Alcalá de Henares was one of the first planned university cities in the world. It was also the original model for the Civitas Dei (city of God), an ideal urban community which Spanish missionaries exported to America and also a model for universities in Europe and other countries.

In 1557, after the battle of St Quentin in which the French army was defeated, Phillip II commissioned the Monastery to be built. He was looking for a mausoleum for his father and a place he could retire to. In the 18th century Charles III enlarged the Monastery since the royal family's guests increased in number as time went by and their visits got longer each time.

The church is the central building of the complex. Built of stone and located in the centre of the complex, the church has 500,000 square feet of space and four façades. The entrance to the church is on the Western façade. South of the Church is the court of the Evangelists, a square enclose by two storied cloisters. There is a small room which adjoins the choir of the church, which was where King Philip watched the celebration of mass when he was ill in his old age, and where he died in 1598.

Royal Palace of Aranjuez

The Royal Palace of Aranjuez, located on the side of the Tajo River, was built in 1561 by King Philip II as a royal summer residence. The palace was rebuilt by the Bourbon King Fernando VI in the 18th century after it was destroyed by fire. To the east lies the Parterre Garden, and to the north the Island Garden (located on an island). Further to the east lies the late 18th century Prince Garden with the smaller palace of Casa del Labrador. The town of Aranjuez, next to the palace, has several historical monuments as well.

Aranjuez it is an immense green monument. Its river, its natural environment, the historical groves, offer unique landscapes sometimes less known for the visitor. To the alternative of the historical and cultural tourism, also it can be offered to him/her that of natural or environmental tourism . The Twelve Streets, a wooded rides studding that surround the Historical Huertas of Aranjuez. Each centennial tree of those which form them is a monument by itself. Don Justo´s Cathedral

Justo Gallego Martínez is building his very own Cathedral in Mejorada del Campo near Madrid, Spain

This is no "model" cathedral and he is neither a qualified architect, nor engineer, nor bricklayer -- he is a farmer. "The plans have only ever existed in my head" and have evolved over time in response to opportunity and inspiration. Nor does he have formal planning permission from the authorities of Mejorada del Campo -- the town in which it is located (20 km from Madrid under the flight-path to the Barajas airport).

His cathedral is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Pilar, Madre de Jesús. He explains: "It's an act of faith." The cathedral has been bequeathed by him to the Bishopric of nearby Alcalá de Henares.

Chinchon´s Main Square
